Pastor Dave on the PEW STUDY America's changing religious landscape

Lately, I have heard many Christians worrying about a recent PEW RESEARCH STUDY that found that those who describe themselves as Christians dropping  nearly eight percentage points in just seven years, from 78.4% to 70.6%.

More alarming for those same people is the growth of those who say they have no religious ties- atheist , agnostic or just unaffiliated- a six point jump from 16.1% to 22.8%

I am not worried or alarmed. I have seen the signs coming.

Let’s take the positive first. Things are not hopeless. No country in the world has a bigger Christian population.  We are still a Christian nation. Our political leaders still quote Bible passages. Christian voters are still sought after by both parties. We still are able to say what we want, worship where we want and do not fear persecution.

Yet, Christian principles are under attack. What has been accepted as right for over 200 years is now considered wrong- marriage before sex….a family before marriage…. marriage instead of living together….a marriage definition that is a covenant between a man and a woman….

Since the Word of God is contradicting current thought, the Bible is under attack. Many consider the morality of the ancient world to be archaic. The modern world knows more now. They believe that it’s time to change the rules.

All this is shoddy reasoning. Deep down, everyone knows it. It’s expressed everyday- at home, at work, at play. People are yearning for the “old” days. They look around and see the results of changing public policy and don’t like what they see- unwanted pregnancies, higher divorce rates, child abuse, pornography and conflicted children.

I don’t have a solution for America. I am only one person in a wider world. For me, the only avenue open is the people I see. That’s why I will continue to share the Word of God, love the Lord and take on the armor provided to me by the Holy Spirit.

My plan is a simple one. Since the change in America is taking place “one person at a time” that’s how I want to spread the gospel. You guessed it “one person at a time”.

In Williams County, Ohio I am ready for war. I will continue to  go out into the world and fight for one soul at a time. Are you joining the “one person at a time” army?

Wind

Isaiah 40:31 “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

In 1988 “Beaches starring, Bette Midler, Barbara Hershey, John Heard, and “The Wind Beneath my Wings” sung by Bette, were released.

Unknown to me at that time the impact the song and movie would have on me in the upcoming years.

On August 28, 2006 Robert G Cochrane, crossed the railroad at C.R. 142 east of Indiana 15 north of New Paris, Indiana.

My “wind”; my “hero”; gone from life here on earth into the arms of Jesus.

Six years older than I, my brother Bob (is what we called Robert G Cochrane) was my mentor, the one I wanted to be like.  He was cool (an accepted term in the late 50’s and early 60’s). He was my big brother, who taught me the farm chores and let me ride in his car to school, 4-H or church events.  He kept an eye on me.

I had learned that just 6 weeks before Bob’s passing he had renewed his love for Christ. I was assured he was in Heaven.

It came to my mind as we were asked to describe how Bob had impacted our lives, that he had been, “the wind beneath my wings.” Bette Milder's song has meaning beyond its words.

Bob followed Christ, and I too had been following Christ.  But with his death and my understanding of his giving his heart, mind and soul to Jesus that I too needed to renew my life to Jesus.

I realized Jesus was the wind beneath Bob’s wings and I wanted that too.

We can soar like eagles on the wings of Jesus; but first we must “hope in the Lord.”

I invite you today to renew your strength, renew your life to Christ. Join us on Sunday at the worship place of your choice.

LHFMC TECH GARAGE

The techs are continuing to work hard to put together the best platform possible to get the church streaming. We met Sunday and were inspired to get the church going because of the potential outreach to the masses that could be accomplished. We were concerned that the equipment was not going to meet what we thought would be appropriate because it was not really up to par with what is being produced today. This was handled when a kind donor stepped forward and pledged 1000 dollars for new equipment. After leaving the meeting some techs began chatting in a group chat and came up with a plan and found that the first step would need to be to test the overall speed of the internet. Danny one of the techs said he would and it was found that the internet really needed to be upgraded as well because the speed was not going to support a live stream. At this point this is an update from the Tech Garage!!!

Matt Brown

The tech garage has been hard at work over the last few days as we found that the internet was not compatible  with what was trying  to be accomplished. Overall this has been corrected  as the church will switch service  providers. The tech's now with that cleared up can focus on getting  the proper equipment  to make the streaming happen. At this point it's research and collaboration  and we hope that by Tuesday  the equipment  can be ordered  and on its way.

The tech team met last night and were in discussion about some options  that were brought forward. At the current  state nothing  has been decided on but the tech team plans to have a vote to see if everyone  agrees on the choices. Once we have the equipment  picked out, than an order can be placed. The blog will than be updated with the choices that were made and all the specs of the equipment. I will also give insight as to why we made the choices that we did.  Thank you for stopping in and checking out the garage.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Matt Brown

Equipment has been ordered and Pastor Dave has said that most has come in. The list of equipment that was ordered will follow in this blog along with a description as to why we ordered it. We want everyone to know that yes it did take longer than scheduled to come to a census as to what to order, the reason for that was the tech team wanted to make an educated decision as to what to order and make sure that all of our areas of need were met.

There is a verse that I found that really fits in with the tech team that I wanted to share. It comes from Hebrews 10: 24-25 which says “and let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another. The tech team works together to help the church but also at the same time is a group of guys that share a common interest in technology which is much like a small group. This group will continue to work together to keep the technology of the church running smooth.

  1. Canon VIXIA HF R500 Full HD Camcorder

The reason for this choice was because of its ability to record in HD but also another major factor was the tech team felt it was very important to have input ability for audio from the sound board rather than a mic on the camera. This would in turn make for better audio quality.

  1. CyberPowerPC - AMD Quad-Core FX-4130 3.80GHz, 8GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, 1GB AMD Radeon HD 6450, Windows 8 64-bit, Keyboard & Mouse

The computer itself which the components are listed above gives us enough processing power to continue to grow our stream and handle growth. This computer is very powerful and without getting all techy, you will have to just have to take my word for it.

1- Acer K222HQL 22" LCD Monitor - LED Backlight, 1920 x 1080 Full HD, 16.7 Million Colors, 16:9, 5 ms, DVI, VGA, 18.10W

This monitor was not very expensive and also gives a large screen with great picture quality.

1- Hauppauge HD PVR 2 Video Recorder - 1080p Recording, Multiple Platforms

The video recorder is used to help get the video in the correct format from the camera and does the leg work to get it to where it will stream live online.

All in All we think we chose the best equipment for the job within the budget that was allotted thanks to the donor. This equipment should be able to grow and expand with the church and allow for additional equipment to be added if necessary.

Barb's notes of praise

What an amazing few weeks we have had a Living Hope.  It began with an awesome concert by Hope's Journey (a group from Alabama) then continued the following weekend with the Great Lakes Gospel Association with several groups organaized by a Nashville lady named Bev McCann.  I found both of these singing groups were the genuine, down-to-earth, God Loving people.  So inspiring!  Then we came to last Saturday when we had our 3rd annual Ladies' Day conference.  A day fellowshiping with our friends and tasting God's goodness along with tasting Susie's Lunch's goodness.  Krista Wilkes, a singing mother from Georgia, and her mother shared beautiful music and thoughts about the fruit of the spirit.  It did not end there but carried on into the evening with a concert by Krista and her husband Jeremy.  Beautiful singers but better yet beautiful encouragers with their songs of Faith.  When it came time to get up on Sunday morning, I told the Lord as I lay in my bed, "I just can't get up and get myself and Randy off to church this morning.  God you must give me your strength for the day because I am physically exhausted!"  Guess what?  He did!  By 8 o'clock I was bouncing in my shoes ready for another day of what God had in store.  Monday came around and I had a few ladies around my breakfast table for a bible study in Genesis and then Tuesday morning there were 9 of us that met for bible study at the church.  I am so greatful that God gives this 70+ year old woman the energy each day to serve Him.  I wonder what He's going to do the rest of the week.  Stay tuned and I will let you know.
