Run to Finish

Acts 20:24 "I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has for me."

2 Timothy 4:7 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

On Sunday I struggled to give the lesson on "Finishing the Race." Not that I did not understand what it means to run and finish the race God has gave me at conversion. It was my focus to study and present, that was experiencing stumbling and going down side paths.

Paul warned us of this to keep watch for wolves that will come and will not spare the flock. They are “false teachers” wanting to divide, scatter and devour the true believer.

To finish well, I must set and keep proper priorities, let me share mine here:

  1. Greet God at the start of my day

  2. Be thankful for all He has done and for the life I have

  3. Pray for my spouse and others

  4. Read and study the scriptures

  5. Serve others before self

As I ponder the “finish line” I share with you what it is.

  1. God’s gift of eternal life

  2. Residing in His Heavenly Kingdom for evermore

Thinking of the world we live in it seems more and more pressing that we stay the course, run the race, complete the task at hand.

Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that the Holy Spirit speaks to me when I stumble or take a side path on the track to run the race and finish well. Keeping my priorities and finishing the race to eternal life is worth far more than my very life. This prayer is not just for me personally Lord, but for all I can influence.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This ties into many messages. Too many times we see people who make the right decision to follow Christ and then cool off. Many we never see again. Christ told his followers that He was the vine and they were branches. He added that we had the choice to stay attached to the vine. If we leave the vine He told them we would be thrown in the fire. OUCH! If you are reading this and realize your branch is not attached to the vine, stop, and recommit your life to Him. That's all it takes to make the most important graft you will ever make.
