Communion

Have you ever given thought to how you personally take communion? I have and I am once again today. Why? Because I am preparing for Sunday school class this Sun. July 12th at Living Hope Free Methodist Church led by Greg Brillhart. (by the way it begins at 9:30 a.m.; why not join us?)

In I Corinthians Paul is disturbed by the news he hears about the manner in which they are partaking in communion and enjoying a huge feast.

When Christ administered that 1st communion on the night before his death, He took the cup and the bread and He gave thanks.

Eucharist from the Greek word "thanksgiving." Christ became our "Eucharist."

Paul goes on to warn the Corinthians whoever eats and drinks in an unworthy manner are guilty of sinning against the body and blood of Jesus.

There it is "unworthy" that has me thinking on my personal communion. Unworthy - unacceptable in a manner respectable for a "good" person; not good enough.

What makes me unacceptable; not good enough?

When I come to the table with un-confessed sin. I need to first look at my life; do I have sin I need to confess? Then I must do so in my seat before approaching or by kneeling at the altar. Once confessed, I am ready to partake and remember that Christ is my “Eucharist.”

Today I see my approach to personal communion as “I am unworthy” but it is through the blood and the body of Christ that I am able to come, confess and be forgiven and partake to be made worthy.

When Jesus comes, I want to be among those who are, “invited” to the wedding feast.

Revelation 19:9 “And the angel said to me, ‘Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.’” And he added, “These are true words that come from God.”

Let this be our prayer Philippians 1:27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel
